As part of preventive measures against West Nile virus, the National Blood Center has imposed restrictions on blood donations in 31 provinces. All donors who "have stayed even for one night in the designated locations" will be tested for the virus. Alternatively, they will be suspended from donating blood and blood components for 28 days.
Ferrara is also among the provinces affected by the measure. The long list includes Bologna, Caserta, Cremona, Forlì-Cesena, Frosinone, L'Aquila, Latina, Lecce, Lecco, Lodi, Mantua, Milan, Modena, Naples, Novara, Oristano, Padua, Parma, Pavia, Piacenza, Ravenna, Reggio Emilia, Rome, Rovigo, Turin, Treviso, Udine, Varese, Venice, and Verona. Similar measures will be imposed for those who have traveled to Greece (Western Attica and Piraeus peripheral units) and Romania (Slaj district). A year-round suspension is expected for the United States and Canada. Hematopoietic stem cell donations (or alternative testing) will also be suspended for Abruzzo, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Lombardy, Piedmont, Puglia, Sardinia, and Veneto.
