“Metaphora” is born, the first virtual city museum
Just a few more days of waiting and then finally next week, Friday 16 May , the Municipal Museum-Art Gallery housed in the former College of the Filippini Fathers will officially reopen and above all the new virtual museum of the City of Temples will be inaugurated, renamed "Metaphora" , located on the top floor of the building. The opening of the city museum was confirmed by the mayor Franco Miccichè who, for the occasion, invited the national president of the Fai , Marco Magnifico , to Agrigento for the inauguration.
The genesis of the Fai project dates back to 2018 , with the idea of dedicating a multimedia exhibition space to the ancient origins of the City of Temples, whose foundation dates back to over 2600 years ago . The Fai had therefore developed a project costing one million and 400 thousand euros , of which one million was then used to face the adaptation and renovation works of the building and the remaining 400 thousand euros were used for the creation of the museum multimedia .
Initially the project was directly developed by the Fai but as time went by, the Environment Fund , while continuing to provide the coordinates and scientific support , preferred to leave the management of the new exhibition space to the Municipal Administration . It will therefore be the same Administration , about two years after the closure of the building , to manage (" at least for now " - says Mayor Miccichè ) the museum structure , leaving it understood however that probably soon, following a call for tenders , everything should be entrusted to private management .
Many months behind schedule , the museum space will reopen when the Year of Culture of Agrigento Italian Capital 2025 is now almost halfway through its journey. Returning to the “Metaphora” , it represents, as Marco Magnifico has always maintained, “ the first city museum created at a national level ” and for the municipal administration it is still the “ flagship ” of the cultural proposals of Agrigento Italian Capital of Culture 2025 .
The production of the scientific contents of the Museum took place in close collaboration with the Superintendency for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Agrigento , in constant dialogue with the companies and consultants identified by the Municipality. The synergic work led to the screening and approval of all the contents relating to the production of a "timeline of the city" , which will provide visitors with the chronological coordinates necessary for the visit.
Basically, the “Filippini Museum” in via Atenea will resume operations with municipal staff and it is not yet clear whether an entrance fee will be required to access it or whether visits will be free .
