Fincantieri, a project with Luiss University for the safety of underwater infrastructure.

ROME – The Fincantieri Foundation has launched the Subcap – SUBsea CAbles Protection project with Rome's Luiss University to strengthen the protection of critical underwater infrastructure . The initiative, led by the Law and Governance: Compliance, Security and Sustainability research center chaired by Professor Paola Severino , is part of the maritime security efforts promoted by Fincantieri, the shipbuilding giant. The collaboration aims to define a clear and coherent regulatory framework for the protection of underwater infrastructure, specifically "explicitly establishing the limits and conditions of protection activities conducted in the underwater domain, especially in international contexts ."
The project therefore aims to comparatively analyze existing legal sources – at international, European and national level – and to develop operational solutions capable of guiding the use of advanced technologies, such as sensors, sonar, drones and autonomous underwater vehicles, within a defined legal framework .
"With the SUBCAP research project, we want to make a concrete contribution to the definition of a clear and shared regulatory framework to accompany the evolution of technologies for the protection of underwater infrastructure," said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri . "The collaboration with Luiss Guido Carli University," he continued, "represents a further step towards an integrated approach between industry and research to competently address the challenges of the future."
"We are proud that our research model has joined forces with the industrial expertise of the world's leading shipbuilding complex in terms of diversification and innovation," said Paolo Boccardelli, Rector of Luiss University . "This alliance, aware of the growing geopolitical importance of the underwater economy, fits into the long-term strategy of a major national player like Fincantieri, capable of projecting the centrality and influence of the Italian economy well beyond its own borders."
