Among the poorest regions in Italy is Basilicata according to the National Report on Income Tax Returns. This study is based on the 2023 tax year and places the Lucanian territory in 17th place, ahead of only Sicily, Puglia, Molise and Calabria. Thanks to the data published by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, it is also possible to discover that the richest municipality in Basilicata is Potenza with an average annual income of 23,371.16 euros.
The regional capital is largely at the top of the list of the richest municipalities, surpassing second place by almost 2,000 euros, obviously also due to the fact that it is also the municipality with the most inhabitants in the entire territory.
Which are the richest municipalities?Behind Potenza stands out Episcopia, a municipality of only 1245 inhabitants and which surpasses more well-known cities such as Lagonegro and Matera, the latter European Capital of Culture in 2019. Lagonegro stops at 21,680.81 euros of average annual income, while Matera occupies fourth place with 21,494.67 euros. In the ranking of the richest municipalities in Basilicata there are also Marsicovetere, Melfi and Pietragralla. Closing the top 10 are Avigliano, Corleto Perticara and Castelluccio Inferiore.

As mentioned, Basilicata is one of the poorest regions in Italy and the National Report on Income Tax Returns also allows us to know which are the Lucanian municipalities with the lowest average annual income. In first place is Carbone, a small municipality of only 485 inhabitants in the province of Potenza. In second place is Craco, known for often being a film set due to the old historic center abandoned after a landslide and becoming a real ghost town. In the ranking of the poorest municipalities in Basilicata there are also Pietrapertosa, Accettura, Aliano and Ruvo del Monte.

Basilicata is very far behind with its 19,400 euros of average annual income which however allows it to leave Sicily , Puglia , Molise and Calabria behind. With 20,000 euros Campania conquers the sixteenth place, then there are Sardinia, Abruzzo, Umbria and Marche. On the podium Bolzano with 27,300 euros and Emilia-Romagna with 25,900 euros, the same average annual income as Lazio.
