A Beautiful (and Affordable) Pen

Jotter Ballpoint Pen

If he's a James Bond fan, he'll recognize this pen as the explosive 007 receives in Goldeneye. If he's not... well it's just a beautiful French pen to replace those plastic ones he hates so much.

The World's Best Slip-On Shoe

Tabac Rough Out Baba

There are two directions to go on for a house shoe-slash-slipper. First is proper. That could be a Charvet slipper, the standard bearer for the category. But if you're looking for a little more value, Sabah is my absolute favorite.

The leather on these Rough Out suede slippers molds to your foot and is naturally good at dealing with sweat, wear, and tear. I like the Rough Out as an in-between for house shoes and beach shoes. If he'd prefer one or the other, I'd get a funky hair-on version for the house or a smooth leather for the beach.

Tasman

The other direction for a house shoe is plush and cozy. For that, no one is better than Ugg. The Tasman is our pick, because it's backless but has enough structure to walk the trash can out to the end of the driveway.

Jimmy Red Bourbon

A bottle can seem lazy, but if it's good he won't care. We have stories about every liquid out there to help you out.

If you want to go the extra mile, get him something with a good story. For me, that's this Jimmy Red bourbon. Jimmy Red is a corn variety that was a staple for bootleggers in the Carolinas. High Wire Distilling—out of Charleston, if you're looking for a distillery tour—found out that Jimmy Red had dwindled down to only a handful of ears. It got enough seeds for a small plot, worked with Clemson University, and has made Jimmy Red the cornerstone of its company.

Since it's made from 100 percent corn, it's a particularly sweet straight bourbon. I don't love it in cocktails for that reason and because a cocktail means you don't get to see that red tint. For sipping though, it's incredible.

18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

If you want a nice bottle of Scotch, I love Bruichladdich. It has a bourbon tie in. The distiller does most of the aging in ex-bourbon casks, and that's just the tip of the whole sustainability iceberg here.

Bruichladdich does everything on Islay, never exporting a production step to mainland Scotland. It's established programs for organic, biodynamic barley. It uses wastewater from distilling to heat the property. It founded The Botanist foundation, and a namesake gin, to promote wildflower and Scottish juniper conservation. And it's done a whole lot of other shit that's led to the company getting a B-Corp certification.

If he's into sustainability, he'll already be sold. But even a more conservative outdoorsman type can be pitched on Bruichladdich, because the Scottish highlands and western islands are some of the world's truly wild locales. If we're going to keep all its incredible species of plants and animals alive, it's going to require some business cooperation. Bruichladdich is leading that.

One of Esquire's Favorite Gins

Cask Rested Gin

The Botanist is the gin wing of Bruichladdich distillery. It recently introduced this cask rested gin, and a cask aged version. The cask aged version sits in Islay casks for three years, developing a lot of whisky dried fruit and grain characteristics.

This cask rested version only has to sit in the barrels for six months. That means it gets the immediate benefits of the wood, without trending too far down the whisky path. That manifests in baking spice and citrus notes that add a wonderful dimension, but keep the whole thing tasting like a gin. It adds a curveball to classic gin recipes and something more akin to a knuckleball in whisky cocktails. For a mixologist man, it's a fun one to play around with.

The Perfect Special Occasion Whisky

Yamazaki 12-Year

You can now pretty reliably find Suntory's Yamazaki sitting on shelves for $200. That means it's the perfect occasion whisky, a great gift. It's delicate and a little bit sweet, a very Japanese take on whisky which is why I love it.

This one's simple: wagyu grade grill classics. He gets hotdogs and burgers and a pair of ribeyes and filet mignons. Snake River Farms is on the forefront of this new wave of direct-to-consumer high-grade meat. I love it, and he will too.

The World's Best Outdoor Pants

Quick Dry Pants

Filson, our favorite outdoor outfitter, recently collaborated with Housefly, a Pennsylvania fly-fishing shop, for a gear capsule. A lot of it trends fashion-y, but these quick dry pants are wearable for a man that's business-only.
