When Bartali fixed his racing bike with Vastano on the counter of Striscia: the great champion hosted the satirical news program several times

On the 25th anniversary of his death, Gino Bartali remains an icon of Italian sport and a symbol of timeless values. Born on July 18, 1914, in Florence, the "Captain" won three Giro d'Italias and two Tours de Frances, but his greatness extended far beyond his sporting achievements. Bartali also became famous for his commitment outside of racing: between 1943 and 1944, exploiting his fame and diplomatic immunity, he transported false documents hidden in the frame of his bicycle, saving numerous citizens of Jewish origin from Nazi-Fascist persecution.

These actions, long ignored, were only recognized after his death with the Gold Medal for Civil Merit and the title of Righteous Among the Nations. But Bartali also enjoyed lighter, more televised moments, such as his appearance on Striscia la notizia : on Epiphany 1992, he co-hosted with Sergio Vastano, providing viewers with unforgettable moments, including a famous scene in which he fixed a racing bike live on television.

During those episodes, Bartali joked about the news being "all wrong, all to be remade" and revealed anecdotes from his career, from his 50 falls to his three broken noses, to the mystery of his hoarse voice, caused by cold spells and accidents. His story continues to inspire, thanks also to a famous song by Paolo Conte and the memory of his epic challenges with Coppi and his triumphs on the roads of Europe.
