Tigem, a rare retinal disease finally curable: the first patient speaks. Meeting at Vanvitelli.

A new gene therapy cures a rare, previously incurable retinal disease: the extraordinary results on the first patient treated were achieved by the Ophthalmology Clinic of the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli" thanks to a "dual-vector" gene therapy developed by the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine in Pozzuoli (Tigem). The new method was also used by the Neapolitan clinic, a world first, on seven other Italian patients. At a meeting sponsored by the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli"—Tuesday, July 20, at 11:00 a.m. in the Rector's Conference Room at Via SM di Costantinopoli 104—preliminary data from these new cases will also be released, "confirming," according to a statement, "the safety and tolerability of the new approach, which offers hope for a cure even for those suffering from many other hereditary eye diseases." A patient treated with the new gene therapy will be present at the meeting and will share his or her case history, testifying to the results of this revolutionary medical treatment. In the presence of the President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca , the speakers will include Giovanni Frañcesco Nicoletti , rector of the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli"; Maria Rosaria Campitiello , head of the Department of Prevention, Research and Health Emergencies of the Ministry of Health; Alberto Auricchio , director of Tigem; and Francesca Simonelli , director of the Ophthalmology Clinic at the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli". The moderator will be science journalist Alessandra Cannone .
