César Gutiérrez dies at 100: he was the last survivor of Squadron 201.

The Ministry of National Defense (Defense) reported the death of retired First Sergeant of Transmissions , César Maximiliano Gutiérrez Marín , who at 100 years old was the last survivor of Air Squadron 201 , a unit of the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force that fought in World War II.
Recognized as a national hero and a symbol of Mexican military commitment in the global conflict, Gutiérrez Marín actively participated in the Pacific Theater of Operations, facing the Axis powers: Germany, Italy and Japan .

"Wishing eternal rest to this military hero, who served the country with honor and loyalty," expressed generals, commissioners, chiefs, officers, cadets, troops, and agents of the Army, Air Force, and National Guard, through a joint statement of condolences issued by the Defense Ministry.
The veteran's legacy was highlighted as an example of "service of spirit, body, and patriotism to current and future generations who wear the uniform of the homeland."
The Defense Ministry also confirmed that it is providing support to Sergeant Gutiérrez Marín's family to ensure they receive "the benefits to which they are entitled by law."

WHO WAS CÉSAR MAXIMILIANO GUTIÉRREZ MARÍN?
Gutiérrez Marín was born on October 12, 1924, in Hermosillo, Sonora . He joined the National Army in July 1942 as a Signals Soldier , after training at the Military Signals School, now part of the Mexican Army.
He was later assigned to the 201st Air Squadron, the only Mexican unit to fight abroad during World War II. For his outstanding participation, the Mexican government awarded him the "Service in the Far East" medal on November 20, 1945 , for having fulfilled his mission "with selflessness, valor, and honor."
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE 201ST AIR SQUADRON?
The 201st Air Squadron , known as the "Águilas Aztecas" , was a unit of the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force that represented Mexico's only direct participation in combat during World War II . Made up of around 300 elements, it was sent in 1945 to the Pacific front , specifically to Luzon, Philippines , where it participated in more than 90 combat missions alongside the Allied forces, mainly American.
Its members were trained at U.S. military bases and operated P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft, facing difficult conditions and enemy fire. Their performance was recognized for their discipline, bravery, and commitment, earning them the respect of their allies and the Mexican government itself, which decorated them upon their return.
