Clara Brugada starts Nahuatl classes in Mexico City high schools: In which schools will she start?

Are you a student interested in learning an indigenous language ? We have news. Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada announced that high schools in the country's capital will be able to teach Nahuatl classes.

According to the Mexico City Government, these classes will be taught in 78 schools where students will be able to take the subject voluntarily to learn more about indigenous peoples and their identity.

"These languages ​​are a testament to the greatness and history of the peoples of Mexico, especially Nahuatl, which is the original language spoken in our city and is the most widely spoken language in the city and in our country," he stressed last Friday, February 21.

During her visit to Technical Secondary School No. 28, Francisco Goitia García, Clara Brugada explained that this school will be one of the campuses where Nahuatl will be taught as an optional subject, meaning that students will decide whether they want to take the lessons or not .

“What do we want? That through the eyes and ears of the children of the city they learn the history of our people, the history of the indigenous peoples, their knowledge and traditions. That is the objective of these classes being able to take place. We learn English in some other schools, at some other levels, why not learn our mother tongue?” she said.

The president explained that students will be able to enroll in public primary and secondary schools in the capital . She also specified that an agreement was made with the Government of Mexico so that Nahuatl teachers can teach this language in schools, which will number 78 this year.

“We are going to govern this city for six years. And we are going to do it in primary school as well, so they are a new generation that can choose to learn Nahuatl ,” he said.

The Mexico City government has declared that the new subject will be applied in schools located near indigenous communities.

The secondary schools where Nahuatl will be taught will be those located in the municipalities of Milpa Alta and Xochimilco .

It is worth mentioning that this subject will not have an impact on the final grade point average of the students' report card; however, it will have official validity through a recognition endorsed by the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) .

The head of the Secretariat of Indigenous Peoples, Neighborhoods and Resident Indigenous Communities (SEPI), Nelly Antonia Juárez , said that it will be an exercise where authorities, the community and students, in this case, from the school, will strengthen indigenous languages.

These will be “processes where they will stop being languages ​​spoken only within the home, within the community, and will take over public spaces,” he added.

He also stressed that this program was created within the framework of the 700th anniversary of the founding of Mexico Tenochtitlan and indicated that this department also takes action such as guaranteeing interpreters or translators for indigenous people to facilitate communication and protect countless knowledge and expertise.
