Fidel Herrera Beltrán dies at 76

Former Veracruz governor Fidel Herrera Beltrán , a member of the PRI, died yesterday in Mexico City at the age of 76. His death caused great consternation among the main political and social leaders of Veracruz and Mexico.
"A few hours ago, my father entered the sleep of eternity. And it will be eternal," said Javier Herrera Borunda, son of Herrera Beltrán, a former local and federal representative, former senator, and former consul in Barcelona .
His son recalled that he was an example of tireless struggle, honest leadership, and profound love. “He touched countless lives with his presence and his words. An exceptional father and husband, a brilliant academic, and a distinguished jurist. But, above all, a generous human being in every sense of the word,” he said.
Fidel Herrera was born in Cosamaloapan on March 7, 1949. He was a lawyer who joined the PRI in the 1970s, distinguishing himself for his leadership and intelligence. At a young age, he held important positions within his party: he became secretary of the PRI 's National Executive Committee in 1975 at just 26 years of age, and later won elected positions such as deputyship and the governorship of his state in 2004.
In October 2015, he was appointed consul in Barcelona by former President Enrique Peña Nieto , a position he held until January 2017, when he retired from politics.
