A 30-year-old man fishing with a group of friends in southeastern Brazil jumped into a lake to escape a swarm of bees that threatened the group, but was fatally attacked by piranhas , local media reported in 2021 (and has now gone viral again).

The victim was with two friends at a lake in the municipality of Brasilandia de Minas, in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, and when they felt the presence of the insects , the three of them jumped into the water, according to the initial report from the local Fire Department.

According to the rescue team's account, the two friends managed to swim to the other side and get out of the lake, but the other fisherman was first attacked by the carnivorous fish that "disfigured his face and part of his body."

Authorities were never able to determine whether the man drowned, unable to escape the piranhas that prevented him from swimming to the other end of the lake, or whether he died as a direct consequence of the attack by the ferocious fish.
