The corner of the Canary Islands where 'Black Mirror' was filmed: a paradise surrounded by mountains

The corner of the Canary Islands where 'Black Mirror' was filmed: a paradise surrounded by mountains

The Canary Islands boast five towns on the prestigious list of the "Most Beautiful Towns in Spain." The first municipality to achieve this award is also the only one on the entire island of Gran Canaria. It is none other than the fascinating town of Tejeda, located in the heart of the "Continent in Miniature." This archipelago town is surrounded by a breathtaking natural environment, and its beauty is so sublime that it served as the location for an episode of Black Mirror .

With just 1,800 inhabitants, the village of Tejeda is the third least populated in all of Gran Canaria and the highest in altitude, but that doesn't prevent it from being one of the most impressive on the island, thanks primarily to the magnificent surrounding landscape. It's no surprise, then, that the creators of the Netflix series chose the town to film an episode of the third season, which is also the longest in the entire series.

Specifically, the Black Mirror episode filmed in Tejeda was 'Hated in the Nation', the sixth and final episode of the series' third season , which featured such well-known Hollywood faces as Kelly Macdonald ( No Country for Old Men ), Faye Marsay ( Game of Thrones ) , and Benedict Wong ( Marvel Cinematic Universe ). At an hour and a half long, it is the longest episode of the entire series and was largely filmed in the historic center of Tejeda.

In the town's urban center, you can find several architectural treasures, such as the Church of Nuestra Señora del Socorro, which has not even been standing for a century and replaced an earlier church, as well as the impressive Parador de Tejeda, one of the most spectacular in all of Spain and from which you can enjoy incredible panoramic views of the extraordinary surroundings of this special Canarian town.

The beautiful town of Tejeda is nestled in the mountainous Cumbres region of Gran Canaria, so the surrounding landscape is incredibly rugged. Near the town center is Pico de los Pozos de las Nieves, which rises almost 2,000 meters above sea level and is the highest point on the island. From its viewpoint, you have sublime views of another of the area's most extraordinary natural sites: Roque Nublo.

This curious basalt geological formation is one of the most iconic sights in all of Gran Canaria, as its unique appearance, along with its location next to the famous rock of 'El Fraile', creates a breathtaking view. In fact, the nature surrounding Tejeda is so captivating that Risco Caído and the island's sacred mountains were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
