Trump launches new 50% tariff and threatens another 200% tariff on these products

Trump launches new 50% tariff and threatens another 200% tariff on these products

U.S. President Donald Trump announced he will impose a 50% tariff on copper imports , in a move he said seeks to bolster national security and protect U.S. industry.

During a Cabinet meeting held this Tuesday, July 8, 2025, in Washington, Trump also announced that he is preparing "very, very high" tariffs of up to 200% on pharmaceutical products manufactured outside the country.

According to the president, his administration will give healthcare companies up to 18 months to return their production to the United States.

Trump goes against chips and Chinese medicines

The president used the Cabinet meeting to announce that he is considering similar measures against semiconductors , without specifying the percentage or timing, although he warned that the new trade policies will be "tougher than ever."

The new copper tariffs, which take effect immediately , are implemented under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, previously used by Trump to justify restrictions on steel, aluminum, and auto imports.

Media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal and AP News reported that this offensive is part of a strategy to pressure large pharmaceutical companies and technology component manufacturers operating in China, India, and other Asian countries.

Markets on alert and more measures to come

Although details of the tariffs on the medical industry have not yet been published in the official record, analysts warned that such high tariffs could have immediate effects on drug and medical device prices .

The Commerce Department is expected to release the executive order on the copper tariff this afternoon, while pharmaceutical and semiconductor companies are reportedly being formally notified of the regulatory changes.
