The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) warns of the dangers of excessive salt consumption and warns that this dietary habit can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and kidney disease. Therefore, the Institute's specialists recommend limiting salt intake in the daily diet.
Brandon Delgado Alguera, Nutrition Promoter at the IMSS Representation in Mexico City North, It points out that salt is essential for maintaining the electrolyte balance of fluids in the body, and contributes to the body's nerve and muscle function at the cellular and blood levels.
He explained that salt has been used since ancient times as a condiment in dishes, in addition to being used as a preservative; It's ideal to use iodized salt (fortified with iodine) because it optimizes brain function in the general population, and especially in children.
However, he emphasized that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends consuming less than five grams of salt per day (two grams of sodium), which is equivalent to just under a teaspoon.
She reminded everyone that excess salt is found in ultra-processed foods such as instant soups, cookies, potatoes, boxed cereals, sausages, among others. She also advised against using table salt, since some seasonings or condiments used in cooking typically already contain it, and there's no need to add more.
Delgado Alguera emphasized that Worldwide, the WHO estimates that 1.89 million deaths annually are associated with excessive salt consumption. and that high blood pressure is the leading cause of death worldwide; in Mexico, the 2020-2023 National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT) reported that in 2022, 29.4% of the adult population suffered from high blood pressure.
The key is to use salt sparingly: small changes like trying more herbs and spices in your meals can help take care of your heart and blood pressure.
