Even more than happiness or gratitude, hope appears to be the key to a meaningful life, scientists say.
New research from the University of Missouri-Columbia shows that hope may be even more important to our well-being than happiness or gratitude. Of all the positive emotions, hope appears to be most closely associated with a meaningful life. Metro previously spoke with Ernst-Jan Pfauth about happiness and meaning and with happiness coach Renate Pijpers about investing in happiness in life .
Using six studies with more than 2,300 participants, the team examined emotions such as amusement, contentment, excitement and happiness. The research, also reported by Neurosciencenews , consistently showed that hope could consistently predict that people experience their lives as meaningful.
According to psychology professor Laura King, experiencing meaning is essential to our mental health. It is said to lead to happiness, better relationships, better physical health and higher income. “Experiencing life as meaningful is crucial to almost every good thing you can imagine in a person’s life.” Moreover, according to her, it is attainable for everyone in everyday life.
The researchers also offer tips for creating hope on a daily basis. One of them is to consciously appreciate positive moments, even small ones. We tend to focus on future milestones, but just noticing that things are going well can give hope.
Another strategy is to seize opportunities. Even in chaotic or uncertain times, because seizing opportunities can create a sense of progress. In addition, it helps to appreciate growth and potential in both yourself and others, because that can inspire you to think about a positive future.
Participating in caring activities can also foster hope. Think of planting trees or raising children. It symbolizes future possibilities, and thus reinforces a hopeful mindset. Finally, it is good to remember in dark days that nothing is permanent. Situations can always change, and hope begins with the belief that it will.
