- Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are finally teaming up for their first joint project, a new Miss Piggy movie.
- The actresses and longtime friends are producing the film, with Oh, Mary! creator Cole Escola writing the screenplay.
- The project is in development at Disney and marks Miss Piggy’s first time headlining her own feature.
A new leading role is on the horizon for Miss Piggy. Half a century after her on-screen debut, the Muppets’ most glamorous star is set to headline her first solo film, with Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, and Cole Escola bringing the project to life.
During a November 5 appearance on Las Culturistas, Lawrence revealed that she and Stone are developing a Miss Piggy movie for Disney, with Oh, Mary! playwright and Tony Award winner Escola attached as the screenwriter. It marks the first collaboration between the two Oscar-winning actresses and the first time Miss Piggy will take center stage in her own feature.
“I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just going to,” Lawrence said on the podcast. “Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it.” When asked if she and Stone plan to appear on-screen, she added, “I think so. We have to.”
Here’s what we know so far.
What will the movie be about?Plot details haven’t been shared yet, but the project is in early development at Disney, which owns the Muppets franchise.
While the storyline is still under wraps, the pairing of Escola’s wit with Miss Piggy’s flair for dramatics suggests a distinctly self-aware take on the beloved character could be coming.
Who’s behind it?Lawrence and Stone will produce the film, marking the first time the two have worked together professionally.
Why is this a milestone for Miss Piggy?Since first appearing on-screen in The Muppet’s Wizard of Oz in 1974, Miss Piggy has been one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters, serving as an enduring symbol of self-confidence, ambition, and unapologetic glamour. Despite starring in multiple ensemble Muppet films, she’s never led a movie of her own until now.
The new project follows a recent wave of reimagined icons from Barbie to Wicked that have brought nostalgic characters back with modern points of view.
Not yet. Disney has not announced a production schedule or premiere date.
