Sergeant Dominik Michalik, press officer of the Katowice City Police Headquarters, told RMF FM that the incident was reported to the police by a passer-by. Thanks to his reaction, a tragedy was averted.

Knife-wielding man in Katowice

Officers from the Katowice City Police Headquarters received a report of a man behaving suspiciously near the university. A police patrol was immediately sent to the scene.

The officers noticed a rowdy and intoxicated man in front of one of the shops outside the university grounds , said Sgt. Michalik.

The aggressor was immediately detained. Officers found two knives and a sharp tool resembling a file on the man. The police did not provide information about the man's intentions.

Police appeal for vigilance

Sergeant Dominik Michalik noted that thanks to the immediate reaction of the police, a tragedy was prevented. Fortunately, no one was hurt. The officer also thanked the informant, who did not hesitate to react to a dangerous situation.

The police checked the university premises to make sure that there were no other people there who could pose a threat (...) We were informed, we were able to (...) verify the threat and intervene as it should have been - he stressed.

The officer also appealed to the public to be vigilant. He reminded that not reacting to aggression is a form of consent to it. The Municipal Police Headquarters in Katowice, which has been conducting preventive actions and social campaigns for years, which aim to draw the public's attention to dangerous behaviors in the social space, also joins the appeal.

"If you witness violence, (...) do not remain indifferent! Notify the services before it's too late" - we read on the KMP website.
