A plague of robberies and thefts in Warsaw. Statistics show more criminals from abroad
In 2024, the police noted an increase in the number of crimes related to so-called pickpocketing, robberies and burglaries, which are organized activities. As it results from reports, many of these crimes are directly related to the activities of Georgians, who, despite the decisive actions of various services, operate more and more effectively in Warsaw.
Criminals use various methods to carry out their operations. Attacks are accompanied by bold and decisive action. Criminals are not afraid of anyone or anything, which in turn arouses fear among the residents of the capital. In 2024, police officers from the downtown Intelligence Department detained men who were attacking passers-by in the center of Warsaw. They acted in a very brutal way. They approached the victim, one of them twisted his arms, and the other beat and robbed him. The attacks took place at the intersection of Krucza and Żurawia streets and on Nowogrodzka Street. The incidents were immediately reported, and the police caught the perpetrators within minutes. It turned out that they were citizens of Georgia. But these are not the only crimes they have on their record. They are also responsible for thefts, which they commit most often on the street, in shopping malls, metro stations, and housing estates. In many cases, it is difficult to catch the perpetrators right away, because their actions are well-thought-out and very dynamic. First, they observe, and then they take action. A year ago, in Ursynów, in front of one of the currency exchange offices, there was a robbery and attempted theft. Three Georgians and one Ukrainian, first observed a van that drove up to collect money, and then, when the guards left with the cash, they attacked them, trying to take their money. However, they were unlucky. During the incident, near the place of the robbery, they came across police officers who noticed the men in balaclavas and immediately gave chase. After a few minutes they managed to stop them.
Crime analysis shows that Georgians work within well-organized structures. They often manage to carry out an attack in a way that leaves no trace. However, the capital's officers take decisive action to detect and detain robbers. All this thanks to well-trained police officers and modern technology.
— We are taking decisive action, including inspections of public places. We are using monitoring and sending patrols to places particularly exposed to crime. We must act quickly and effectively to ensure the safety of Warsaw residents, says Robert Szumiata from the Warsaw Police Headquarters.
Last year alone, uniformed officers detained as many as 228 Georgian citizens, of whom 85 were temporarily arrested and 29 received preventive measures. According to the data, Georgians were most often detained for stealing someone else's property, 169 times for drug crimes, 133 times for traffic offenses, and 99 times for criminal offenses.
They are rampant in our country and committing crimes.General police statistics show that the first three places in terms of the number of crimes committed in our country last year were taken by Ukraine, Georgia and Belarus, and the last three by Slovakia, Vietnam and Germany. These were usually thefts, burglaries and assaults. Warsaw residents are watching what is happening with concern and have started to avoid places particularly prone to assaults.
— It's not safe. There are more and more foreigners here and they feel that they can do whatever they want. It shouldn't be like this, that a person in their own country can't go out peacefully on the street, but is afraid of being attacked and robbed — says Ms. Natalia, a resident of Warsaw.
Residents demand decisive government actionPolice officers fight every day to make residents feel safe and the streets peaceful, but it's not that easy.
— We do everything in our power to make every resident feel that we are present. However, we cannot be everywhere. We try to prevent crimes and or arrest their perpetrators through intensive operational activities. Decisive action is always needed in this matter. It often happens that we arrest someone, and then it turns out that the perpetrator receives a suspended sentence or supervision and is free again — adds Szumiata.
A reporter from "Fakt" asked Warsaw residents what should change. Most say that a firm government response to citizens from other countries is necessary.
— Every foreigner who commits a crime in Poland should be deported to their own country with a lifetime ban on returning — explains Mrs. Iwona. Wioletta and Dagmara are of a similar opinion. The women believe that people who live in our country and commit crimes should be deported.
