An unusual event at the Łódź zoo. Three packeaters were born

A pair of packers, or forest dogs from South America, became parents for the second time in the Orientarium of the ZOO Łódź, where they have been living for three years. This time, three males were born. Soon, together with the whole family, they will be able to be admired in the outdoor enclosure.

The parents of the cubs born in mid-January are 8-year-old female Tequila and her same-age male Chip .

"The pair had offspring earlier, in November 2023, but now all the attention is focused on the youngest members of the herd," we learn from a statement from the Łódź Zoo.

As emphasized, this is an "extraordinary event" because the zoo in Łódź is the only one in Poland that breeds this species.

A month after birth, the puppies were weighed and it turned out that they were growing normally, each weighing less than a kilogram . The gender of the puppies was also checked - it turned out that they were three males .

Packers are herd animals , which is why the entire family stays together, and as the caretakers of these animals point out, the older sister Olinda actively supports her parents in taking care of her three younger brothers.

In their natural habitats, forest dogs live in dense forests and forest-grasslands of South America. Pack dogs always choose areas near bodies of water.

They have webbed toes and are excellent swimmers . In nature, pack rats feed on rodents, including the lowland pack rat - hence their name.

"Since they feel better at higher temperatures, in spring the entire family will be able to be admired in the enclosure, " the Łódź Zoo announces.
