Canadians are reluctant to visit New York. New data shows a further decline in US entry.

New data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shows a further decline in Canadian entry into the U.S. through border crossings in New York State. In June of this year, 376,000 fewer vehicles entered the United States through this section of the border than during the same period last year. The decline occurred at all seven major border crossings.
The largest decline in vehicle traffic was recorded at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, one of the busiest border crossings in the northern United States. In June, 68,388 fewer vehicles crossed the border there than a year earlier. The largest percentage decline was recorded at the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge in Niagara Falls, with nearly 30 percent fewer vehicles than in June 2024.
Significant declines were also recorded at two northern New York State border crossings. Vehicle traffic over the Ogdensburg-Prescott Bridge decreased by nearly 27 percent, and over the Thousand Islands Bridge by 14 percent.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer attributes the decline in Canadians' interest in visiting the U.S. to the ongoing tariff war. Schumer is calling on President Donald Trump to reverse the high tariffs against his northern neighbor.
“Declines in border crossings will continue to hurt businesses in upstate New York that rely on Canadian tourism during the summer season,” the senator stressed.
