The 400th anniversary of the martyrdom of Father Macarius, a forgotten Carmelite from Przemyśl, will fall in 2024. His deed is commemorated by an epitaph in the church, where the monk's body rests in the basement. Last year, several events related to Father Macarius and commemorating his figure were held. In June, Father Macarius, as subprior of the Discalced Carmelite monastery in Przemyśl, became famous for his heroic attitude towards the Tatars at the gates of the city. When in the summer of 1624 the city authorities asked the fathers for an embassy to Khan Kantymir, he was the only one who stood face to face with the Tatar leader. He paid for it with a cruel death at the hands of the invaders, who, however, soon left from the city walls. From that moment on, he has been considered a martyr for the city of Przemyśl.
[middle1]The only thing is that the story of Father Makary is not widely known among the residents, even the one involving Saint Vincent. The celebrations of the anniversary of the martyr's death were initiated by the Przemyśl Carmelites, led by prior Father Krzysztof Górski, and two institutions joined in: the State Archive in Przemyśl and the Przemyśl Public Library...
