Officials urge people to refrain from setting off fireworks on July 4. 'Spend the weekend at home, not in the ER'

Ahead of Independence Day, New York City officials are urging people to leave fireworks displays to the professionals and not try to set them off themselves. Last year, 45 people were hospitalized in NYC due to fireworks injuries.
The New York City Department of Health is urging residents not to light fireworks themselves, as a lack of training in pyrotechnics can lead to serious accidents.
“Spend the holiday weekend with friends and family, not in the ER with fireworks injuries,” said acting health commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse.
"New York's iconic 4th of July fireworks displays are world-famous, but it's the technical experts who design and set them off. Keep your friends and loved ones safe by entrusting your fireworks to professionals this 4th of July," the official said.
New York City prohibits the use, purchase, or sale of fireworks, including sparklers.
Despite this, residents sometimes obtain pyrotechnics illegally. Last year, 45 people were admitted to city hospitals with injuries caused by fireworks. In the years 2017-2023, there were an average of 33 such accidents per year.
