The Bolestraszyce Arboretum was founded half a century ago by Professor Jerzy Piórecki. "It was thanks to his vision, passion, and commitment that it was possible to create a place that today is not only a valuable nature center, but also a space for meetings, education, and admiration for the beauty of nature," the ceremony emphasized, thanking him for creating "a foundation upon which we could build and develop over the years." There were also special screenings and exhibitions, a concert, book launches, honoring distinguished individuals and institutions, and—of course—a stroll along the Arboretum's picturesque paths.
"I congratulate you on the achievements you and all those who have passed away have achieved over the decades, leaving their hearts and work here forever. I congratulate you and thank you for putting so much effort, experience, professionalism, commitment, and talent into creating and thriving the Bolestraszyce Arboretum on the map of Podkarpacie – a true treasure of Polish nature and culture."
– said Marshal Władysław Ortyl during his speech.
– In a space marked by the spirit of art and the beauty of nature, you managed to create not only an idyllic garden, but also a place emanating scientific knowledge and at the same time being a living monument of nature and history, which attracts thousands of visitors every year.
– he emphasized.
Marshal Władysław Ortyl also presented the Arboretum's director, Dr. Narcyz Piórecki, with a commemorative coat of arms. Two exhibitions were also opened during the ceremony: the first, dedicated to the artist and owner of Bolestraszyce, Piotr Michałowski, and the second, dedicated to the people and efforts that led to the creation and development of the Arboretum.
HistoryThe Bolestraszyce Arboretum was established in 1975. Located 7 km northeast of Przemyśl, it is a valuable Polish natural and cultural monument. It includes a park and manor house where the renowned painter Piotr Michałowski lived and worked in the mid-19th century. The arboretum also houses the 19th-century fort of the former Przemyśl Fortress. Here, ancient trees, remnants of the former castle gardens, provide a picturesque accent among the new plantings, which include species of foreign origin and native trees, shrubs, and rare, endangered, and protected plant species. As the staff emphasize, the arboretum draws on the long traditions of Małopolska's gardens, particularly those of Sieniawa (Izabela Czartoryska), Zarzecze (Magdalena Morska-Dzieduszycka), Dubiecko (Krasicki), Miżyniec (Lubomirski), and Medyka (Pawlikowski). From 1975 to 2001, the Arboretum's organizer and director was Professor Jerzy Piórecki. In 2001, he was succeeded by Professor Narcyz Piórecki.
