Creating special bathing zones with barriers limiting the inflow of pollutants and cyanobacteria – this is the aim of a project by a team of researchers from Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM) in Poznań.
The solution - according to the university - could restore recreational functions to many polluted lakes in Poland, which is why the patented system of bathing areas with purified water was presented to the Ministry of Sport and Tourism.
Cyanobacteria are one of the main threats to summer bathers. A project by Poznań researchers involves creating special bathing areas with barriers that limit the inflow of pollutants and cyanobacteria.
“The bathing water will be purified in a system located near a designated part of the reservoir,” explains one of the authors of the solution, Dr. Grzegorz Borkowski from the Department of Tourism and Recreation of the Faculty of Geographical and Geological Sciences of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, quoted on the university’s website.
As the scientist explains, "water will be extracted through filters placed at the bottom of the reservoir or watercourse, or through a suitable geological deposit." Further purification will take place in a system to which the water will be supplied via a system of pumps.
Water, pre-treated in a geological deposit or filter, may be subjected to aeration, ozonation, and UV irradiation. It will then be released under pressure back to the swimming area through a system of diffusers. "Their function is to aerate and heat the discharged water through contact with atmospheric air," as noted in a pressurized message on the Adam Mickiewicz University website.
Additionally, to increase recreational attractiveness, bathing areas can be equipped with water devices that will simultaneously support the water purification and heating process.
As we read on the university's website, "the system will operate continuously throughout the entire period of use of the swimming area." After the season ends, the barrier will be opened, allowing the swimming area water to fully mix with the lake water.
The patented purified water bathing system developed by Poznań researchers: Eng. Adam Młynarczyk, Prof. Zygmunt Młynarczyk, and Dr. Grzegorz Borkowski, was presented at the Ministry of Sport and Tourism in early July. The meeting was attended by Secretary of State Piotr Borys and representatives of the ministry. The possibilities of implementing the technology nationwide were discussed. (PAP)
