Croatia is on fire. Poles' vacations have turned into a nightmare

Croatia is on fire. Poles' vacations have turned into a nightmare

Croatia is definitely one of the most popular holiday destinations. We often fly there on our own or drive. It's the same this year. For several weeks now, both Poles and other tourists from abroad have been enjoying the weather there and the warm Adriatic Sea. Unfortunately, today it's not pleasant everywhere. Fires have broken out in the Dalmatia area.

Fire in Croatia

Fire and smoke in Croatia were spotted on Saturday, June 21st morning, including over Pisak on the Makarska Riviera. The road was closed, firefighting planes and chaos were visible. The fire has already been extinguished, but about 300 hectares of vegetation burned.

It's not over yet. Fires are affecting most of the Dalmatian coast, and local authorities are talking about a whole suspicious series. The fires are dangerous in Marušići, Mimice and the town of Baška Voda. The strong wind is making it difficult to extinguish the fire. The case is being investigated as an act of arson. It is known that at least one intentional arson occurred, as Siniša Mihanović, deputy chief of the Split-Dalmatia police, assured at a press conference in Makarska.

Several hundred firefighters are taking part in extinguishing the fire. They are all trying to save the houses in danger. Residents are also fighting the fire by dousing the buildings with water. Ultimately, at least 12 houses burned down. At this point, no one has died or been injured.

Poles describe the situation

Due to the fire, many people fled, seeking shelter, among them many Poles. Some were resting very close to the place of danger, which is why evacuations to designated places were mandatory. "We managed to reach the car and drive away safely almost a moment before the flames took hold," commented one of the men in an interview with Kontakt24.

“The ash was already falling on us, we couldn’t breathe,” said a woman who had to flee the fire with her husband. Some people were watching the smoke from a distance and hadn’t heard about the evacuations at the moment. One thing is for sure, the situation is still not stable, and there is a lot of damage visible.

According to tourists, the overall situation looked dramatic. Popular Makarska and its surroundings were supposedly blocked. People tried to leave the cities, and many roads were closed, including the Adriatic motorway DC8 on the Omiš-Makarska section.

According to the authorities, the worst is over, but things are still not calm. Among other things, extinguishing the fire is necessary.
