Greece and Spain were defeated. This European country had no equal.

The World Travel Awards have named this year's leaders in global tourism. Alongside the best airlines and hotels, the awards also included countries and regions worthy of attention. In Europe, where Greece triumphed last year, Portugal was unrivaled this time. The country, with its capital in Lisbon, was selected from a list of twelve nominees, including Italy, Spain, and Norway.
Portugal instead of SpainAt this year's World Travel Awards in Sardinia, Portugal won the title of best European destination for the seventh time. Located on the Iberian Peninsula, it regained the title it lost last year to Greece. In the race for first place, Portugal also beat Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Turkey, which also qualified for the European category. "This recognition reflects the work, commitment, and high qualifications of all the professionals who daily make tourism one of the main pillars of our economy," commented Pedro Machado, Secretary of State for Tourism, Trade, and Services at Turismo de Portugal.
Portuguese island is gaining popularityThe 32nd World Travel Awards recognized not only continental Portugal but also its largest island, Madeira. Portuguese cities also attracted attention, with Porto and Lisbon receiving awards in the categories of Best City Destination and Best City Break, respectively.
Only the distant Azores had to acknowledge the superiority of another rival this year, as the winner in the best adventure destination category was the Spanish province of Huesca La Magia.
