Alentejo wine sales up 8% in 2024

The Alentejo wine trade registered an 8% growth in 2024 compared to the previous year, with more than 92 million liters sold, while exports fell by 2.4%, the wine commission announced today.
In a statement sent to the Lusa news agency, the Alentejo Regional Wine Commission (CVRA) indicated that, last year, 92.2 million liters of Alentejo wine were sold, equivalent to more than 123 million bottles.
This was “the best result achieved in the last five years”, highlighted the organization, highlighting that the increase in sales of Alentejo wine was 8% compared to the previous year, which represents an additional 6.7 million liters.
According to CVRA, the quantity exported in 2024 decreased by 2.4%, with a reduction in European markets and growth in third countries, unlike the national market, which grew by 9.3% in the twelve months up to September 2024.
“These are good results in a context that, for wine, is not exactly positive, but they show that Alentejo, even in less good times, has the capacity to turn things around and recover its presence in the market”, the president of CVRA told Lusa.
Francisco Mateus alluded to the decrease in wine consumption globally, attributing this trend to issues related to the Covid-19 pandemic, rising inflation and decreasing purchasing power or the anti-alcohol movement.
“Last year was not even similar to what we had in 2019”, considered “a year within normality” for the sector, he stressed, highlighting that, in the years 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023, the 90 million liters sold were not exceeded.
Noting that the 2024 results “show that in the fifth year it was possible to reverse the sequence of less good numbers”, Francisco Mateus pointed out that these data are “a good sign” for the future of Alentejo wines.
Regarding the drop in exports, the president of CVRA admitted that, in this regard, “last year was not exceptional”, but highlighted as the “only positive fact” the maintenance of the average price of Alentejo wine in international markets.
“We sell less quantity, but we can maintain the average price and I think that is good”, he stressed, adding that, according to statistical data, the average value of exported Alentejo wine is 3.58 euros per litre.
According to the CVRA, sales of wine with the Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC) Alentejo grew by 11%, with an additional 2.1 million liters, while the Regional Alentejo registered an increase of 7%, with an increase of 4.6 million liters.
Red wine continued to lead sales with 66.8 million liters, an increase of 7.5%, but white and rosé had the best results ever.
In the statement, CVRA stated that the results achieved by white and rosé demonstrate “the evolution of the consumption profile and the good acceptance of these categories by consumers”.
According to the organization, white wines grew by 9.4% and rosés by 2.7% and, together, represented 27% of the volume of Alentejo wines that were sold.
Created in 1989, CVRA is responsible for the protection and defense of DOC Alentejo and the Alentejo Geographical Indication, certification and control of origin and quality, promotion and encouragement of sustainability.
Alentejo is the national leader in certified wines, with around 40% of the total sales value in a universe of 14 wine-producing regions in Portugal.
With a vineyard area of 23.3 thousand hectares, 30% of its production is destined for export to five main destinations, namely Brazil, Switzerland, the United States, the United Kingdom and Poland.
