Coimbra: Fire in Marco dos Pereiros sawmill frightens population

A fire broke out yesterday at the company Henriques & Lucas – Indústria De Madeiras, located in Marco dos Pereiros (Coimbra). Nine workers were evacuated from the sawmill, which had the flames confined to the dust extraction silo. The local population was also frightened by the intense smoke.
The alert for the incident was at 1:30 pm. According to the deputy commander of the Coimbra Firefighters, Carlos Carecho, the work took a long time.
“Our main difficulty was reaching the material that was incandescent in that silo. We had to cool it down to create access and extinguish the fire,” he said.
