EU new car registrations down 2.6% in January 2025

The registration of new cars in the European Union (EU) fell by 2.6% in January 2025, with the French and Italian markets recording the biggest declines, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) said today.
The Spanish market was the only one that registered an increase, around 5.3% of new registrations, while the French market fell by 6.2%, the Italian market by 5.8% and the German market by 2.8%.
In January 2025, sales of new battery electric vehicles increased by 34% to 124,341 units. In the same vein, sales of hybrid-electric vehicles increased by 18.4% to 290,014 units.
New registrations of plug-in hybrid electric cars declined in January 2025, falling 8.5% to 61,406 units.
Petrol and diesel cars registered a drop of 18.9% with 244,763 new cars registered.
In terms of market shares, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) rose to 15% in January 2025, a growth of 4.1% compared to the same period in the previous year.
Hybrid-electric vehicles rose to 34.9% of the market share, becoming the preferred choice for car buyers in the European Union, while the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 39.4% in January 2025, down from 48.7% a year ago.
