EU responds to Trump tariffs: European market has been 'providential' for US

The European Union (EU) has been "providential" for the United States, the European Commission (EC) argued on Wednesday in response to Donald Trump who said the bloc was created to harm US interests.
"The European Union is the largest free trade market in the world. And it has been providential for the United States," a spokesperson for the European executive said in a statement.
Trump announced today that European products will soon be subject to 25% tariffs, accusing the EU of undermining the United States.
"The EU was created to irritate the United States. That was the goal. And they succeeded. But now I am the President," Trump said.
European countries, he added, may be tempted to retaliate, but they will not succeed.
"They can try to do that, but the effects will never be the same, because we can walk away. (...) They can try to retaliate, but it won't work," Trump repeated.
In reference to the new threats from the US President, the EU stated that it will react "firmly and immediately" to new customs duties, the introduction of which is not yet scheduled.
