Gustavo Petro criticizes the absence of the US at the COP30 Leaders' Summit.

During his participation in the opening of the Leaders' Summit of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30) in Belém, this Thursday, December 6th, the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro , spent a significant portion of his time criticizing the United States. He listed the government of President Donald Trump as one of the main culprits for the climate crisis and the difficulty in curbing global warming.
“The President of the United States is not present here. And he has a pattern of denying science. Because of this, part of society is closing its eyes and heading towards the abyss. Donald Trump is wrong, because we can clearly see the collapse that will happen if the United States does not decarbonize its economy,” Petro attacked.
He highlighted what he perceives as threats of invasion and attacks by the US on the sovereignty of Latin American countries, especially Colombia, Venezuela, and Cuba, under the pretext of combating drug trafficking.
The Colombian president also pointed to the responsibilities of Europe, which, according to him, prefers to invest in armaments and wars rather than make more effective commitments to the environment. Petro said that "Russia is not the enemy, the climate crisis is the enemy."
“It must be acknowledged that, after 29 COPs and many speeches, we are facing failure. And this is happening, first and foremost, because of the oil, carbon, and gas lobbies, which prioritize profit over life. This is immoral. We are close to moving from a stage of climate change to one of climate collapse, which means the point of no return. In other words, the death of our existence on this planet. Literally, the apocalypse,” Petro concluded.

After difficult years , we've returned to a minimally normal Brazil. This new normal, however, remains fraught with uncertainty . The Bolsonaro threat persists, and the appetites of the market and Congress continue to pressure the government. Abroad, the global advance of the far-right and the brutality in Gaza and Ukraine risk imploding the fragile foundations of global governance.
