Nuclear energy and energy transition, with Bruno Soares Gonçalves

Our guest is Bruno Soares Gonçalves — physicist, director of the Institute of Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion in Lisbon and one of the most prominent experts in nuclear fusion in Portugal. He leads projects linked to ITER, the largest experimental fusion reactor in the world, in France, and has represented Portugal in European scientific programmes.
In this episode we talk about his career as a researcher, the technical and scientific challenges of nuclear fusion, Portugal's role in these international efforts and the future of nuclear energy — both fusion and fission — in the response to the climate crisis. We discuss the adoption of nuclear energy in Portugal, discussing not only environmental but also economic and safety aspects.
