There are suppliers of the Chinese company CALB interested in investing in Portugal, the Minister of Economy said today.
“The president of CALB has just told me that there are many CALB suppliers here who are considering investing in Portugal”, revealed Pedro Reis today on the sidelines of the launch ceremony of the project for the battery factory in Sines, Setúbal district.
“This is one of those big investment bangs that happen every now and then. Entering Portugal at this time is tremendously important,” he added.
“This is a highly competitive race. They brought in suppliers from CALB International who are considering investing in Portugal,” said Pedro Reis, without providing further details as “it would be giving away the advantage to the international competition.”
This is a two billion euro investment, which will create 1,800 jobs and could contribute 4% to the national GDP.
The plant will have a production capacity of 15 GWh of energy storage. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025 and will be fully operational in 2028.
The project was recognized by the Portuguese Government as a Project of National Interest (PIN).
The Chinese from CALB praised Portugal today, justifying their choice to install a gigafactory in Sines, Setúbal district.
“We chose Portugal to establish our European gigafactory due to its strategic advantages, the strong potential of the Portuguese economy and its skilled workforce,” began by saying CALB chairwoman Liu Jingyu.
“The Port of Sines offers exceptional logistical conditions, with its deep-water port, 24/7 operations and the largest rail freight platform in Europe. This makes it an ideal hub for distribution in the European market,” added the official at the project launch ceremony held today in Lisbon.
“This is the perfect environment for CALB’s success and long-term vision. The goal is to build a state-of-the-art, zero-carbon, AI-powered gigafactory that will not only support the Portuguese economy but also accelerate the European energy transition. For CALB, this is an important milestone to begin a long-term partnership,” said the manager.
The manager also praised the executive: “The Portuguese Government’s investments in infrastructure and its support for green energy create the perfect environment for CALB’s success and its long-term vision.”
