Two arrested for attempted murder in Santiago do Cacém

Two men, aged 26 and 27, were arrested by the Judicial Police (PJ) and were held in preventive detention on suspicion of attempted murder in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, district of Setúbal, it was announced today.
These arrests, disclosed in a statement by the PJ, were carried out on Tuesday by members of the Setúbal Criminal Investigation Department of this police force, in compliance with arrest warrants and taking them to prison.
Contacted by Lusa, a police source explained that these two men, of foreign nationality, had previously been detained by the PJ and attended their first judicial interrogation, having then been subject to non-custodial coercive measures.
Now, the same source said, the prosecutor in the case promoted the application of the coercive measure of preventive detention, which was agreed to by the judge, and so the arrest warrants and transfer to prison were issued.
In the statement, the PJ indicated that the two defendants are suspected of co-authorship of two crimes of attempted murder and possession of a prohibited weapon, which occurred on April 8, 2024, in the Ermidas do Sado area, in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém.
On that date, he added, a group of people, including those now detained, went to the Ermidas do Sado area to collect an alleged debt from two citizens, also foreigners, fleeing after the attacks.
“Given the attacks they were subjected to, the victims, aged 30 and 31, were at risk of death and remained hospitalized for a few days,” the PJ noted.
A police source told Lusa that, as part of this case, seven alleged attackers have already been arrested, all of foreign nationality, four of whom are in preventive detention, awaiting trial.
