Algarvensis Geopark inspires a walking tour with sardines in Alte

Registration is now open for the summer edition of the Trilho da Ribeira d'Alte XL, a guided walking tour of approximately 9 kilometers, which will take place on July 27th in the village of Alte, municipality of Loulé, in the heart of the territory of the aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark – Algarvensis .

Organized by the Alte Professional School, the initiative combines contact with nature, urban art, and an exploration of the region's geological heritage, considered one of the most important testaments to the history of the Earth in southern Portugal.

The circular route passes through several iconic landmarks, such as Fonte Grande and Fonte Pequena, discharge points of the Querença–Silves aquifer. These springs emerge from the contact between fractured Jurassic limestone rocks, which allow groundwater circulation, and less permeable volcano-sedimentary formations.

Another highlight is the Queda do Vigário waterfall, approximately 24 meters high, where the water has shaped an impressive formation of limestone tuffs, fossilizing plant fragments and other materials carried over time.

Along the trail, you can also see outcrops of ash and volcanic lava, remnants of large-scale eruptions that occurred approximately 201 million years ago, during the transition from the Triassic to the Jurassic. These phenomena are associated with the fragmentation of Pangea and the process that created the present-day Atlantic Ocean.

Beyond its geological component, Alte offers a strong cultural and artistic identity, with several urban art murals along the route. At the end of the tour, participants can join an optional sardine party at Fonte Pequena, one of the most refreshing and pleasant spots in the village.
