PCP says recognition of Palestine is urgent

The PCP argued this Thursday that the recognition of the State of Palestine is urgent and should have already happened, considering that the Government's decision "is inseparable from the pressure of public opinion" and cannot be "dragged out over time."
"In light of the Government's announcement of contacts regarding possible recognition of the State of Palestine, postponing a possible decision until September, the PCP reiterates that such a decision is urgent and should have already been implemented, as the PCP has repeatedly proposed in the Assembly of the Republic," reads a statement sent by the party led by Paulo Raimundo.
From the communists' perspective, the announcement made this Thursday by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro "is inseparable from the pressure of public opinion and the broad movement of solidarity with the Palestinian people in the face of the ongoing crimes perpetrated by the State of Israel."
For the PCP, the recognition of the State of Palestine “should not be subject to external conditions and a delay in time, as the Government intends”.
This decision, according to the communists, “ must necessarily be accompanied by the condemnation and demand for an end to the ongoing genocide , the bombings and attacks by the State of Israel in Gaza and the West Bank.”
The PCP also calls for the “realization of the national rights of the Palestinian people, an essential condition for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.”
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced this Thursday that he will consult with the President of the Republic and political parties with parliamentary representation with a view to "considering the recognition of the Palestinian State" at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
"The Government has decided to consult His Excellency the President of the Republic and the Political Parties represented in the Assembly of the Republic, with a view to considering the recognition of the Palestinian State, in a procedure that can be concluded during the High-Level Week of the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations, to be held in New York next September," the Prime Minister announced in a statement.
