77-year-old man arrested on suspicion of domestic violence

A 77-year-old man was remanded in custody in Paços de Ferreira, in the Porto district, on suspicion of domestic violence against his 72-year-old partner, the GNR announced this Tuesday.

In a statement, the GNR's Porto Territorial Command indicated that the arrest took place on Friday, as part of a complaint of domestic violence.

At the scene, the GNR found that the suspect “was exerting verbal, physical and psychological violence” against his partner and during the action “the suspect made insults and death threats against the victim , culminating in his immediate arrest”, the statement reads.

Following the action, emergency medical services were also activated to support and monitor the victim.

The detainee was brought before the Lousada Judicial Court and was held in preventive detention at the Custoias Prison, Matosinhos.

This police action was supported by the Freamunde Territorial Post and the Research and Support Unit for Specific Victims (NIAVE) in Porto, as well as the support of the Paços de Ferreira Volunteer Firefighters.

The GNR takes the opportunity to remind everyone that domestic violence is a public crime. "Reporting it is a collective responsibility," it emphasizes.
