Learn how to create a plant barrier against scorpions and centipedes

A natural and effective solution to reduce the presence of scorpions and centipedes in residential areas can be found in the garden itself. According to biologist Fabiano Soares , creating a barrier with aromatic plants, known as a hedge, can help keep these arthropods away, which are common in urban environments and pose health risks.

Scorpions and centipedes like dark, humid places with debris. They also take shelter under leaf litter, which is the accumulation of leaves in the yard,” explains Fabiano. These animals feed on insects such as crickets, cockroaches and grasshoppers. In the case of the yellow scorpion, there is an additional aggravating factor : reproduction by parthenogenesis, in which the female generates clones of herself, accelerating the infestation.

How to make the barrier?

The expert recommends starting the barrier with proper preparation of the land . “Before planting, it is essential to seal gaps in walls, sidewalks and drains. Then, use black soil and fertilizer in equal parts, forming the substrate for the plants. A waterproofing blanket can help prevent moisture in the foundations of the house,” he advises.

The recommended species include rosemary, lavender, citronella and rue , all of which are aromatic and have properties that help repel scorpions and centipedes. In addition to the odor, the vegetation attracts natural predators of these animals, such as frogs, lizards, birds and opossums.

However, Fabiano warns: “ There is no point in planting and not taking care of it . If the garden becomes a deposit of dry leaves, the effect can be the opposite. Regular maintenance is essential.”

The hedge works both as a physical barrier and as a form of environmental control. And more than that, it promotes a natural balance . But, to ensure its effectiveness, it is also essential to eliminate the accumulation of debris and avoid the presence of cockroaches, the preferred food of scorpions.

“The secret is in the combination: the right plants, a clean environment and constant maintenance”, concludes the biologist.
