Boat washes ashore in the Algarve with 38 migrants

A boat carrying 38 people arrived at the Algarve beach of Boca do Rio, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, late Friday afternoon. According to information provided by CNN Portugal and confirmed by the Lagos Maritime Police Local Command, 36 adults and two children of "various nationalities" were on board, showing signs of dehydration.
The wooden vessel reportedly departed from North Africa, and the alert was raised around 8:05 p.m. by a nearby citizen. The people on the boat were picked up by the National Republican Guard (GNR), and authorities remain on site gathering additional information about them and providing medical assistance. There is still no information regarding the vessel's exact origin, its nationalities, the reason for its departure, or the medical conditions of those on board.
"Upon arrival at the scene, Maritime Police officers found the individuals showing signs of poor health and promptly assisted them. Officers from the GNR (National Republican Guard), Vila do Bispo Civil Protection, INEM (National Institute of Emergency Medicine), and the Vila do Bispo and Lagos Volunteer Fire Department were also involved, conducting a medical evaluation of these migrants and ensuring the provision of food and water," the Lagos Maritime Police Local Command wrote in a statement. According to CNN Portugal, some of the vessel's passengers were transferred to Portimão Hospital, others to Faro Hospital.
