J osé Luís Carneiro stressed that he is "well acquainted with the obstacles in the territory" of Resende, Cinfães (Viseu district) and Baião (Porto district), Municipalities of the Intermunicipal Community (CIM) Tâmega e Sousa.
Among the obstacles highlighted are access to Resende, roads promised by the socialist prime minister António Costa, which the current president of the Municipality of Resende, Garcez Trindade (PS) has already admitted to the Lusa news agency that "it was not fulfilled" and resulted in a "great disappointment" in party political life.
José Luís Carneiro admitted today that, among the obstacles to the development of the region, "is the completion of the connection between Baião and Ponte Ermida, Resende, Bigorne and A24, which is one of the main objectives" of the municipality and the territory.
"We fought hard for this project. You know that. We fought for this project to be put out to tender in 2009. Unfortunately, the financial crisis led the AD government to decide to suspend public investments, including this one, the connection between Baião and Resende," he said.
He argued that "it is very important to ensure that in the future, in addition to this investment that is already planned for implementation," "the connection between Resende, Bigorne and the A24 is also guaranteed, because it is fundamental for territorial cohesion, for attracting investment, for creating jobs and for improving living conditions and creating new opportunities."
Another route that he considered "vital is also the connection between Soalhães, (Marco de Canaveses) Mesquinhata (Baião) and Cinfães", that is, a variant of the National Road 211 (EN211), "with connection to the Carrapatelo dam, essential infrastructure investments".
"I want it to be clear that this is a commitment I make to all of you who already know me well. Commitments we make are commitments to respect and fulfill when we have the responsibility of governing this country," he said.
In front of around 400 people, on the day that the socialist candidate for the Resende City Council, Jorge Caetano, was presented for the local elections on October 12, none of the speakers spoke about the current mayor Garcez Trindade, who also did not attend the Municipal Forum and who has been critical of his party.
The end of the afternoon was marked by constant interventions and allusions to the mandates of António Borges, former mayor of Resende and current president of the PS council, and Armando Mourisco, former president of the Municipality of Cinfães, current deputy and president of the PS district of Viseu.
José Luís Carneiro promised that the PS, with António Borges, "will lead the country again" and assumed that he will be the future prime minister, "not out of vanity, but because he knows the country well" and the territory he was speaking about.
"We have to face major challenges in the country. Both immediate and future challenges, and for these challenges, development in each of our country's 308 municipalities is crucial," he stated.
