Madeira Government opens tender for final phase of construction of new hospital

The Madeira Government (PSD/CDS-PP) opened the international public tender on Thursday for the third and final phase of construction of the new Central and University Hospital, the island's chief executive announced today. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a mass in honor of Our Lady of Monte, Madeira's patron saint, Miguel Albuquerque (PSD) indicated that the tender was launched "for a value of €260 million," following a review of the initially estimated prices.
"It will be a fundamental project for the future, which will be completed, God willing, and Our Lady helping, within the expected timeframe," he stated. Miguel Albuquerque emphasized that the goal is to complete the project by 2027, but acknowledged that after completion, a "very complex phase" of moving from the old hospital to the new one will follow. "This requires some complex technical procedures, and obviously, this could change some of the timeframes," he noted.
The construction of the Madeira Central and University Hospital, which in total is expected to cost more than the 350 million euros initially planned, including the acquisition of medical and hospital equipment, is financed by the autonomous region (50%) and the Portuguese State (50%).
The new hospital unit, located in the parish of São Martinho, in Funchal, covers an area of 172 thousand square meters and will have 607 beds, 79 of which are for intensive care and 503 for general hospitalization, a parking lot with capacity for almost 1,200 cars and a helipad.
Construction work, which began in 2021, currently involves 38 companies and around 500 workers.
