The new mayor of Aveiro, Luís Souto Miranda (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM), will govern in a minority for the next four years, having chosen not to assign responsibilities to opposition councilors, it was announced this Wednesday.

The new municipal executive, which took office on Friday, held its first ordinary meeting of the 2025/2029 term this Wednesday, in a private session, to distribute responsibilities and appoint the vice-president. The PSD/CDS-PP/PPM coalition won the elections on October 12, but only with four elected officials, the same number as the PS, while Chega elected one councilor.

According to a press release, the president, Luís Souto, will be responsible for the portfolios of Culture, Science and Higher Education, External Relations and European Funds, Environment and Health, Planning and Public Works, and Sports, Youth and Active Aging.

Rui Santos, chosen as vice-president, will be responsible for the areas of Urban Services and Public Space, Housing and Social Development, Territorial Cohesion, Security and Civil Protection, and Education.

Councilwoman Ana Cláudia Oliveira (CDS), the only one remaining from the previous executive, was assigned the portfolios of Private Works, Markets and Fairs, and Legal Affairs.

Finally, councilor Pedro Almeida, who is also making his debut on the council, will be in charge of Human Resources, Administrative Modernization and Digital Transition, Economic Development and Municipal Finances, Innovation, and Mobility and Transport.

By decision of the mayor, councilors Ana Cláudia Oliveira and Pedro Almeida were appointed to perform their duties on a full-time, permanent and exclusive basis.

At Wednesday's meeting, it was also decided that ordinary council meetings would be held every two weeks, on the first and third Thursdays of each month, with the first meetings being public, with a period for public participation starting at 5:30 pm.

The executive also learned of the suspension, for a period of six months, of the mandate of councilor Alberto Souto de Miranda, brother of the current president, who was the head of the PS list, with the position being taken by Isabel Vila-Chã, number six on the list of candidates for the City Council.
