These are the best wines in Brazil, according to a national evaluation
After evaluating 1,007 labels from 10 Brazilian states, the 10th edition of the Grande Prova Vinhos do Brasil reached a verdict on the country's best wines . They were tasted blind by a jury of 22 experts.
In total, the best wines in Brazil were divided into around 50 categories, covering whites, sparkling wines , semi-sparkling wines, sweet wines, rosé wines, reds, sweet wines, fortified wines and grape juices. The competition focuses on wines available on the market , with an eye on the end consumer.
The tastings were held over four days at the end of March and the results were announced at the end of April. The winners will receive their medals this Wednesday (7) during the Wine South America 2025 fair, in Bento Gonçalves (RS).
Methodology
The judges taste the wines completely blind, without any information about the producer, region or price. The evaluations are based on the various sensory aspects of the wine, such as visual, olfactory and gustatory aspects. The judges then assign a score on a scale of up to 100 points, from which an average is calculated.
In the competition, wines with a score between 91 and 92 points win gold medals . Wines with a score above 93 points win a double gold medal . The best wines are those that obtained the highest score within their category.
Best wines in the competitionAmong the best red wines, the best Cabernet Sauvignon went to a 2005 vintage, the Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, from the Cordilheira de Sant'Anna Winery, in Campanha Gaúcha. The best Merlot went to the Merlot Memorável 2020 label, from the Don Laurindo winery, in Vale dos Vinhedos.
The best Syrah had not just one, but two favorites. They are the Syrah 2023, from the Davo Winery, in São Gonçalo do Sapucaí (MG), and the Syrah Quatro Altitudes 2022, from the Casa Vitor Winery, in Brasília . The best Tannat was the Don Tannat 2020, another label from the Don Laurindo winery, in Vale dos Vinhedos.
The best Pinot Noir in Brazil was the Sfera Pinot Noir 2021, from the Arbugeri Winery, in Serra Gaúcha. Also noteworthy was the best Cabernet Franc with the Grande Vindima Cabernet Franc 2018, from the Lidio Carraro Winery, in Encruzilhada do Sul (RS).
Among the whites, examples are the best Chardonnay , which went to the TF Terroir Chardonnay 2023, from Terra Fiel Vinhos, from Campanha Gaúcha. The best Sauvignon Blanc had two favorites: the Tempos de Góes Reserva 2023, from Vinícola Góes, in São Roque (SP), and the Mantivino 2024, from Vinícola Casa Correa & Medici, from Serra da Mantiqueira , in Minas Gerais.
