14 years of silence: Unknown person suddenly activated bitcoins, which rose in price to $2 billion
An unknown person activated crypto wallets that had not been used for 14 years, moving 20 thousand bitcoins from them. In 2011, these assets were valued at $16 thousand, but now their value has increased to two billion dollars. This is evidenced by data from the Blockchain.com observer.
These wallets are called "sleeping" because their owners have not used them for many years. During this time, the wallets have received only small amounts of bitcoins, mostly less than one dollar, which can be considered spam transactions. However, on the morning of July 4, they suddenly became active.
On April 3, 2011, 23,377.83 BTC were transferred from one of the wallets to three different addresses. Two of them received 10,000 BTC each, and the third one received the remaining 3,377.83 BTC. On the morning of July 4, all the bitcoins were transferred from both wallets to new addresses, with a difference of about half an hour.
Earlier, British miner James Howells, who has been unsuccessfully searching for his hard drive with cryptocurrency fortune in a landfill for ten years , wanted to buy a plot of land in a landfill to continue his search. Howells started mining in 2009 and stored his assets on a rented hard drive. In 2013, his ex-girlfriend accidentally threw away this drive. Since then, Howells has not stopped trying to find it, because with the current price of bitcoin at $93,637, the contents of his wallet could be worth more than $749 million.
