Bread may become more expensive than gold: food prices in the world will rise due to climate

Economist Podoprigora: Global food prices are expected to rise due to climate

Climate change poses a serious threat to the global food system. Experts warn that unless timely action is taken, food prices will rise significantly in the next two to three decades, and in some parts of the world, bread will become an unaffordable luxury.
As Vladimir Podoprigora, Associate Professor of the Department of Political Analysis and Socio-Psychological Processes at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, notes, climate change poses a danger to the agricultural sector, disrupting production processes, logistics chains and price stability. According to expert estimates, if preventive measures are not taken, global food production could decrease by 10-25% by mid-century. An increase in the Earth's population to 10 billion people by 2050 will only increase demand for food products, putting additional pressure on the markets, RIA Novosti reports.
Countries dependent on food imports will be most vulnerable to rising prices, Podoprigora believes. Climate change could make certain regions unsuitable for growing certain types of plants, while opening up new opportunities for others. However, this will require significant investment in adapting agriculture.
Yulia Davydova, a representative of the same Department of Political Analysis and Socio-Psychological Processes, emphasizes that abnormal heat has a particularly negative effect on grain crops, corn, soybeans, and sunflowers. In general, high temperatures are detrimental to most plants, including vegetables, berries, and garden crops. Further increases in temperature and droughts are fraught with desertification of territories.
The expert warns that if there is a sharp reduction in the supply of agricultural products on the world market, there will be a jump in food prices. In the long term of 20-30 years, bread in some regions may become a luxury item comparable in value to gold.
