Russian banks have the right not to accept old dollars, so there is no need to try to exchange them now unless there is an urgent need. This was stated by Tatyana Belyanchikova, Associate Professor of the Department of World Financial Markets and Fintech at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, in an interview with the Prime agency.
According to the expert, dollar bills have no expiration date - the US is required to accept any if they were issued after 1914. However, Belyanchikova noted that only government organizations have such an obligation - commercial banks can set their own rules.
Meanwhile, the associate professor clarified that American legislation in this regard does not apply to other countries, and there is no obligation to accept old-style banknotes.
In addition, credit institutions have always had the right to accept so-called worn-out banknotes with a commission. It is noted that banks have the right to decide for themselves at what rate to accept various banknotes - there is no direct prohibition in regulatory documents on this matter.
Belyanchikova advised to wait with the exchange, since if relations with the US improve, access to new banknotes could become easier.
Earlier, representatives of the Bank of Russia stated that it is still difficult to assess the sustainability of the ruble strengthening and its impact on prices in Russia. On Tuesday, February 25, the Bank of Russialowered the official dollar exchange rate, bringing it to 86 rubles. The euro exchange rate fell to 90.94 rubles.
