MOSCOW, July 11 - RIA Novosti. The United States continues to view Africa through the prism of "feudal lord-vassal" relations, and the mini-summit of African countries in Washington is a classic example of a neo-colonial approach, State Duma Deputy Speaker Alexander Babakov (A Just Russia - For Truth) told RIA Novosti. US President Donald Trump met with colleagues from Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania and Senegal at the White House. "The mini-summit of African countries, held in Washington at the initiative of Donald Trump, is a classic example of the neo-colonial approach, in which African states are assigned the role of resource suppliers in exchange for promises of economic cooperation. The United States still views Africa through the prism of the "feudal lord - vassal" relationship," Babakov said. He noted that the choice of countries to participate in the summit clearly demonstrates this: representatives of Gabon, Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania and Senegal were invited to Washington - states with rich, but not yet sufficiently protected natural resources and limited capacity to defend their sovereignty. At the same time, according to him, the largest economy on the continent - Nigeria - was not invited to the summit. "This is not surprising: Nigeria is increasingly developing a sovereign foreign economic policy, building honest, mutually beneficial relations with Russia and the BRICS countries. Such a path simply does not fit into the logic of the American neo-colonial project. This clearly demonstrates the thesis that where there is political and economic sovereignty, there is no place for the externally imposed model of "aid in exchange for control," the politician added. According to Babakov, it is especially indicative that the United States continues to ignore its historical responsibility to Africa in its foreign policy. "The latest example is the story of US mediation between Congo and Rwanda. This intervention became possible only after Kinshasa offered Washington preferences for its mineral resources, which are vital for the American electronics industry," he specified. The parliamentarian recalled that during his first term as US President in early 2018, Donald Trump publicly humiliated and insulted all of Africa, as well as Haiti and El Salvador, but now that resources have once again become a priority for global corporations, these countries have unexpectedly become "partners." Such an approach, according to Babakov, is not a manifestation of respect, but an attempt to use geopolitical instability to extract benefits. "Unlike Washington, Russia and the BRICS countries proceed from the principles of equality, respect and genuine partnership. We see how Africa is rapidly moving towards economic and political sovereignty, and we are ready to provide support along this path. The model of the future multipolar world is mutually beneficial cooperation between free and respected states. And it is precisely this model that underlies our interaction with African partners," concluded the Deputy Speaker of the State Duma.
