National Economic Council Chairman Kevin Hassett noted that travel and leisure industries have been particularly hard hit.

The current US government shutdown could cause long-term damage and is already causing far more severe economic harm than expected, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said in an interview with Fox News on Friday, TASS reports.

"The impact of the shutdown on the economy is much worse than expected," Hassett said, adding that industries related to travel and leisure have been particularly hard hit.

The current US government shutdown has already become the longest in the country's history, breaking the record set in 2018-2019 during Donald Trump's first term as president. The shutdown, which began at midnight on December 22, 2018, ended on its 35th day—January 25, 2019.
