The world press is discussing the American president's new position on the conflict in Ukraine.

Trump believes Ukraine will be able to reclaim the territory within the original borders that began the conflict. Foreign media are calling the US president's remarks "an unexpected change of policy."
US President Donald Trump believes that Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, will be able to regain its territory within the borders that began the conflict. The American president wrote this on social media.
According to Trump, Russia has been "fighting a senseless war for three and a half years that a real military power could win in less than a week." He added that the United States will continue to supply NATO with weapons so that the alliance can do with them "whatever it wants." The US president believes that now is the time for Ukraine to act. However, he wishes both Moscow and Kyiv "all the best."
At a meeting with French President Macron, Trump stated that his good relationship with Vladimir Putin, contrary to Trump's expectations, "had no bearing" on resolving the Ukrainian conflict. He reiterated his assertion that Ukraine could reclaim its land.
According to The Daily Telegraph , Trump's words about Ukraine possibly returning to its old borders shouldn't be taken literally. The British newspaper calls the American president's post in Truth Social "an unexpected change of course," but notes that it merely means handing over the initiative for military support for Kyiv to Europe and NATO. This could be bad news for Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump hasn't promised new support for Ukraine or stepped up efforts against Russia; "there's no hint of that." The US's only commitment remains to continue selling arms to its allies. Trump is simply tired of resolving the Ukrainian conflict. He's realized the process is complex and has begun to distance himself from it. It seems he's had enough.
The New York Times also called Trump's statements extremely unexpected. Just a month ago, the American president supported a plan that would have required Ukraine to cede some land in exchange for peace. Many European leaders and diplomats at the UN General Assembly were perplexed by the true meaning of Trump's statement that Ukraine could defeat Russia. One senior European military official said it was confusing. Many American allies, meanwhile, fear that Trump is actually laying the groundwork for the restoration of full diplomatic and trade relations with Russia, which has long been one of Moscow's goals.
Reuters notes that the US president's tone contrasted sharply with his reception of Vladimir Putin at the Alaska summit last month. The publication discusses Trump's assertion that Ukraine will be able to reclaim its lost territories. This would require Kyiv to withdraw Russian troops from approximately 20% of its former territory, including the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia ceded in 2014. This would be an unprecedented step.
The BBC (blocked in Russia) points out that Trump did not even mention Crimea in his speech.
