Call for organ donation from patient who had two kidney transplants in 11 years

Living in the Konak district, 52-year-old Fatma Peker applied to the hospital with complaints of high blood pressure in 2010.

The patient was diagnosed with kidney failure and given medication. Despite this, Peker's kidney failure progressed and he underwent dialysis treatment for 10 months.

Later, Peker applied to a private hospital in Çiğli and it was decided that he would undergo a kidney transplant. Peker recovered after the kidney taken from his wife was transplanted by the hospital's Kidney Transplant Department Head Specialist Doctor Işık Özgü and his team.

Peker's health deteriorated again in 2018. Peker was transplanted with a kidney taken from his brother Ahmet Peker by the same doctors in the same hospital in 2021.

Peker, who has been 4 years since his second transplant, celebrated his healthy days by cutting a cake with the doctors who performed the transplant at the hospital where he had two transplant surgeries.

HE EXPLAINED THE IMPORTANCE OF ORGAN DONATION

Fatma Peker told reporters that she was happy to regain her health after the transplants.

Drawing attention to the role of organ donation in his recovery, Peker said, "I would like everyone to donate organs. Thankfully, both of them donated their kidneys, I can say that I am lucky in that respect. I have regained my health, I am very happy. I am continuing my own life."

Dr. Işık Özgü also stated that Peker was the first kidney transplant patient in their hospital.

Özgü, who stated that they continue to perform transplant surgeries, said, "The results of kidney transplants from living donors are better. Kidneys have a longer lifespan. If a kidney lives for an average of 15 or 20 years, we can say that this is a very successful period. The average period is not this long for transplants from cadavers. However, the patient's compliance and coming to check-ups, informing them when they have a health problem, and using their medications at the right time are important here."
